Yellowstone has five entrances, but two Montana gateway towns handle most visitor traffic: West Yellowstone and Gardiner. They're only about 90 minutes apart by road (through the park, in season), but they set up very different trips.
West Yellowstone: The Busiest Entrance, Closest to the Geysers
West Yellowstone sits at the park's West Entrance, the single busiest of the five, and the closest gateway town to Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Midway and Upper Geyser Basins. It also has the largest concentration of lodging, dining, and outfitters of any gateway community, plus the most winter infrastructure — most snowcoach and guided snowmobile tours depart from here.
Choose West Yellowstone if:
- The geyser basins (Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Midway) are your top priority
- You're visiting in winter and want easy access to snowcoach/snowmobile tours
- You want the widest choice of lodging and dining options
Gardiner: The Only Year-Round Vehicle Entrance
Gardiner sits at the park's North Entrance, marked by the historic Roosevelt Arch, and is the only entrance open to regular vehicles year-round — every other entrance closes to wheeled vehicles for winter. Gardiner is also the closest gateway to Mammoth Hot Springs' travertine terraces and the Lamar Valley, widely considered one of the best wildlife-viewing corridors in North America for wolves, bison, and elk.
Choose Gardiner if:
- Wildlife viewing (wolves, bison, elk in the Lamar Valley) is your priority
- You're visiting in winter and want to drive in without booking a guided tour
- Mammoth Hot Springs is on your must-see list
Distance to the Rest of the Park
From West Yellowstone, it's a short drive to the geyser basins but a longer haul across the park to Mammoth or the Lamar Valley. From Gardiner, the reverse is true — quick access to Mammoth and Lamar, but a longer drive to Old Faithful. Neither gateway puts every major feature within a short drive; your priority list should decide your base.
What About the Other Entrances?
The park's other three entrances see meaningfully less traffic and serve different itineraries: the East Entrance (near Cody, Wyoming, about 53 miles from the park) and South Entrance (near Jackson, Wyoming, about 60 miles away and also the gateway to Grand Teton National Park) are better fits if you're combining Yellowstone with those areas. The tiny, seasonal Northeast Entrance at Silver Gate/Cooke City, Montana, is mostly used by travelers already in the Lamar Valley area or coming from the Beartooth Highway.
Bottom Line
If you had to pick one factor to decide: are you there for geysers or wildlife? West Yellowstone puts you closest to the thermal features that make Yellowstone famous; Gardiner puts you closest to the wildlife-viewing terrain — and it's your only option for a self-driven winter visit.
